Installation Systems
As we say goodbye to summer and hello to the new school year, darker mornings and evenings, now is the time to consider how secure your house is during the day when it may be left unoccupied for several hours at a time. Did you know that in the UK 74 homes are burgled every hour? Read our General home security suggestions below!
The kids are back at school and the house is quiet. Perfect time for a burglary?
General home security suggestions:
- Make sure your property and contents are sufficiently insured against theft.
- Mark your more expensive items with your house number and postcode using UV security markers. Take photos of anything valuable that you cannot mark, such as jewellery.
- Register your items with immobilise.com which will help police return any recovered items in event of a theft.
- Store very valuable items, such as bank cards, passports, wills, etc. in a locked safe, bank, or secure facility.
- Invest in automatic timer switches to turn lights on and make your home look occupied.
- Lock away tools and ladders so that they cannot be used to gain entry to your property.
- Lock any sheds/outbuildings so that thieves cannot access tools.
- Ensure any higher-value items cannot be viewed from outside the house.
- Replace broken windows and door locks immediately.
- Change the locks when you move into a new property.
- Install double-glazed windows and doors with approved locking mechanisms (BS-3621) if your property has old windows or doors that do not offer good protection.
- Consider investing in a smart doorbell that allows you to check who is at your front door even when you are not at home.
- Install a Grade 2 alarm system that is appropriate for average-sized properties. Larger properties may benefit from a Grade 3 alarm system. Both of these are insurance-approved.
- Install movement-sensitive lighting around your property to deter intruders.
- Make sure your alarm system is in good working order with our Engineer Maintenance Service on a regular basis. Contact us at sales@thirdeyeis.co.uk or call 0208 368 1080
- Check for any unusual marks on the pavements, fences or walls outside your house. These might be used by potential thieves to target properties. Contact the police if you notice anything strange.
While you are out of the house:
- Make sure you close and lock all doors and windows and set the alarm if you have one.
- Set lights or radios to come on at various times to deter thieves.
- Do not share on social media that you are not at home. According to a recent survey, 78% of burglars check Facebook and Twitter to source potential properties.
- Leave a mobile number with a friend or neighbour in case there is a problem and they need to get in contact.
Research also shows that 47% of burglaries are not planned in advance but are by opportunist thieves who take advantage of a lapse in your security. Thieves will often also come back again to the same property, so if you have been a victim, make sure you update your home security as soon as possible.
By taking the above precautions and using an approved and accredited company, either NSI NACOSS or SSAIB, to install your burglar alarm system, you can reduce the risk of becoming a statistic.
Third Eye can help with a range of options to ensure your security whilst you are out of the house:
- Bells Only = the siren will ring in the case of an activation
- Bells with Phone APP for remote operation and Push notifications to mobile devices
- Bells with text messaging = we can install a GSM module into the panel that texts your mobile if there is a problem.
- Monitored = our NSI Gold accredited Alarm Reporting Centre (ARC) monitors the alarm 24/7 and calls you and/or your keyholders in the event of an activation. Option: add on APP control.
- Monitored with Police response = as in 4. above but the ARC would call the Police in the case of 2 confirmed activations. Option: add on APP control.
We can also install CCTV, the RingPro doorbell, and Floodlight cameras at your property and we will cover this in more detail in another blog.
